Meet your Presenter:

Tom Griffiths, Director, Airports Plus,has over 45 years’ experience in the operation and management of airports in the general aviation, scheduled domestic regular public transport, international public transport and military areas, commencing his career in 1973 as an Airport Inspector with the then Department of Civil Aviation. In 1988 he was employed by the Federal Airports Corporation as the manager of Hobart International Airport, responsible for all aspects of the airport operations as well as commercial, finance and staffing matters.

He has lectured in Airport Security and Emergency Management at Officers Development Courses at the Tasmanian Police Academy, and in environmental management and auditing at the University of Tasmania (Engineering and Business Management courses). He has designed and implemented a certified Management System to the AS/NZS ISO 9002 (Quality Management System) standards and has also been a member of the National Airport Emergency Planning Committee.

In 1999 he became a self-employed consultant and a director of Airports Plus Pty Ltd. In this role he provides Aerodrome Safety and Technical Inspections, operational, technical, management advice, master planning, business planning and assessing on and off-airport development applications primarily to airport owners and operators throughout Australia, airlines and governments. He is a CASA Approved Person authorized to conduct Aerodrome Safety Inspections.

He also provides training courses for Aerodrome Reporting Officers and Aerodrome Managers. Since 2009 Tom has been providing the annual training for the Australian Antarctic Division expeditioners involved in the provision of aircraft facilities in the Antarctic.

Tom has worked extensively with Sydney Airport Corporation Ltd in a range of projects, including developing options for low visibility operations, developing a number of expositions and was involved in the planning for the 2000 Olympic Games.

In conjunction with his business partner, Tom developed a new Rural and Regional Aerodrome Emergency Plan template for the Australian Airports Association.

He has developed a number of Security Programs for a range of Regional Airports, Airlines and Aircraft Operators. The Plans have been developed to meet the requirements of the Aviation Transport Security Act.

During 2006 he provided operational assessments and inspections of the International Airports in Nigeria to the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria. The project included the preparation of operational manuals to prepare the Authority for an International Civil Aviation Organisation safety audit.

In 2008 he provided airport operational advice to the Oman Airports Management Company, primarily concerned with Muscat International Airport and to Sharjah International Airport in the UAE.
In 2011 he was part of a team of experts that inspected the UAE Air Defence and Air Force airfields for compliance with the UAE and ICAO standards.Since 2014 has been an active member of the specialist working groups and the Technical Working Group that helped CASA review the standards applicable to Australian Airports and to develop the revised Civil Aviation Safety Regulations Part 139 and the Part 139 Manual of Standards. 

Tom continues to challenge CASA on the standards and assists airports in the implementation of the changes.
